PGY1&2 News! Take Your Exam from Home: Announcing Online Proctored In-training Didactic Exams

Given the current environment, this Fall ABFAS is providing an alternative for those of you who may have difficulties getting away to a Pearson VUE testing center – an opportunity to take the PGY 1&2 exams online. You can choose whether to take the exam online or at the testing center. Unfortunately, due to the technical nature of how online proctoring works, we cannot offer the CBPS exam via online so you will need to go to the testing center for the CBPS ITE.

We are offering the online proctored didactic exams during the September 16-21 window, and you will be able to schedule at any time during that window. However, since these exams will be proctored by a real person, there is limited availability to schedule an exam at any given time. The bonus is that the exam will be available 24/7.

What is online proctoring?

Pearson VUE online proctoring lets you take your ITE didactic examinations in the comfort of your own home, office, or any secure, quite location.  The exam process involves a simple check-in, interaction with a live proctor, a check of identification, and face-matching technology.

What equipment do you need to take an online proctored exam?

In order to be eligible for an online proctored ITE didactic exam, you will need a functioning personal computer with a webcam and a strong, reliable, web connection, and a cell phone with video capability. Candidates will need to check their computer’s compatibility to Pearson VUE’s software prior to the exam.  Finally, rooms need to be free of test preparation materials, noise or any distractions, which include roommates, pets, or any other visitors.

When can I schedule my online proctored didactic ITE?

While registration for this year’s ITE opens on June 8, 2020, scheduling for online proctored exams will not be available until mid-July.  If you are interested in didactic exam online proctoring, you will need to wait until then to schedule your didactic exam.  If you intend to go to a Pearson VUE center for both exams, you can schedule both as soon as your program director registers you and you complete your PRR profile.  And please don’t forget, you MUST schedule the CBPS exam at a testing center as soon as you can.  Pearson VUE centers have reduced their capacity in order to have safe distances between exam takers so space may be limited.

What do I need to do to schedule online proctoring?

After your residency program director or coordinator registers you for your ABFAS ITE and you complete your PRR profile, you will be able to login to your ABFAS.org profile and link to the Pearson VUE scheduling site. Once there, you will have the option to schedule your didactic ITEs as either an online proctored or Pearson testing center exam and the CBPS exam at the Pearson center. Scheduling instructions are available on the How to Schedule page.

We hope this additional flexibility helps.
