Alternative Pathway to Board Certification
Expanding Access to ABFAS Board Certification for Eligible Foot and Ankle Surgeons
ABFAS is now approved by CPME to provide an alternative pathway to certification for eligible DPMs who completed less than the current three-year CPME-approved surgical residency training or whose ABFAS Board Qualified status and Board Certification eligibility has expired.
The ABFAS Alternative Pathway expands eligibility while preserving ABFAS's established certification standards. It is not a separate certification, or an easier route. Candidates approved for the Alternative Pathway must demonstrate the same knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of all ABFAS Diplomates to become Board Certified.

Registration for Part I exams for eligible Alternative Pathway candidates will open June 1, 2027. We will let you know in advance if you are eligible and how to submit documentation requirements.
