ABFAS is the only foot and ankle surgery certification board recognized by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education through the Joint Committee on the Recognition of Specialty Boards. The American Podiatric Medical Association delegated responsibility to recognize specialty certifying boards in podiatry to the Council.
In accordance with standards published by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) and The Joint Commission, ABFAS conducts primary source verification of the podiatric medical school graduation, completion of residency training, and state licensure for each ABFAS certified and board qualified podiatric surgeon.
There are more than 200 institutions that sponsor podiatric residency training programs. There are typically over 1,000 residents in training in any one year.
More than 40 states require passing the examination administered by the National Board of Podiatric Medical Examiners to obtain a state license.
